为株形扩展的中型灌木，因其豌豆状花朵与优雅的叶片而被种植。生长在拱形枝条上的叶片由许多卵形至长圆形的小叶所组成。由紫粉色花朵所构成的繁茂直立的花穗自初夏至秋季间长出。在气候寒冷的条件下，要靠着温暖的墙壁种植。也被推荐的，与之十分相似的灌木有钝花木蓝（I.ambylantha）。

栽培

种植在排水良好且湿润、肥力适中的土壤里，喜全日照。于早春时进行修剪，在恰与地表齐平处剪去地上部。

花木蓝为豆科蝶形花亚科木蓝属落叶灌木，又名吉氏木蓝。

花木蓝的花期较长，夏季会开紫红色的花，是盛夏良好的观花植物和北方难得的绿化材料。

此外，花木蓝还有一定的药用价值，经济价值比较高。

茎圆柱形，无毛，幼枝有棱，疏生白色丁字毛。
